  • Launched at Rs 53,376 (drum) and Rs 55,373 (disc) (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi), it certainly has a lot going for it with a host of segment-firsts.

  • The first of which includes the revised gearbox. The Platina H-Gear is currently the only 110cc motorcycle to come with a 5-speed gearbox. Essentially, Bajaj wants you to use the additional 5th gear on ‘highways’ only, thus reducing the load on the engine during longer commutes, hence the nomenclature ‘H-Gear’.

  • The second major update here comes in the form of a gear shift and gear assist indicator. The ‘H-Gear’ feature is something that isn’t seen even on premium motorcycles like say the Honda CB300R, let alone 110cc commuter offerings.

  • This not only shows what gear you’re in, but also suggests if you should shift up or down for better fuel efficiency.

  • This is showcased on the bike’s all-new semi-digital instrument console, which also displays the tripmeter, odometer and fuel range indicator.

  • Additionally, it also gets a front disc brake, tubeless tyres and anti-skid braking system (Bajaj’s lingo for CBS) which applies brakes on both wheels.

  • Powering the Platina 110 H-Gear is still the same 115cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine which produces the same 8.6PS of power at 7,000rpm and 9.81Nm of torque at 5,000rpm.

  • Suspension duties are handled by a telescopic fork at the front and nitrox dual shock absorbers at the rear.

  • The Bajaj Platina 110 H-Gear competes against the Honda Dream Yuga (Rs 55,233), the TVS Star City Plus (Rs 52,417) and the Hero Splendor iSmart Plus (Rs 56,280, all ex-showroom Delhi).

Breaking Down BS6 Carburettors And Fuel Injection Explained

It’s now been nearly 4 months since BS6 emission norms came into effect, and almost all the bikes and scooters sold in India have been updated to meet the stricter regulations. Most recent among these to receive the updates was the TVS Scooty Zest BS6 , which was launched a couple of days ago at Rs 58,640. Like all the BS6 updates we’ve seen so far, this new version is more expensive than its BS4 predecessor, by around Rs 6,000 in this case. And the biggest reason behind these price hikes is the addition of a fuel-injection system. So what exactly is it? And how did bikes work before fuel-injection came into the picture? Let’s take a look: To understand why a fuel-injection (FI) system is needed, we first need to understand its predecessor: the carburettor. Both FI and carburettors do the same job: mixing air and fuel in the correct proportions before it’s sent into the engine. The diagram above shows a carburettor’s layout. Air enters at the top, flows through a narrow con...
